A freshly inaugurated footpath running around the complete seaboard of England is being publicly launched.

At 2,689 miles long, it has been declared the longest managed shoreline path in the world, per the public agency that created it.

Its official designation is lengthy itself - the King Charles III Coastal Trail - but for the first time, it creates a seamless route, enabling ramblers to traverse England's shoreline step by step.

A Trail of Varied Scenery

Throughout its length, it passes through some of the country's most beautiful and varied vistas, from tidal wetlands and dunes to chalk faces, dunes and historic coastal towns.

One standout feature is the famous white cliffs of the Seven Sisters in East Sussex, which also constitutes a recently announced conservation zone.

Nearly Two Decades in the Development

A large part of the new shoreline path was previously in place, but over 1,000 miles of new paths have been created, and countless stretches improved. Walkways have been resurfaced, fences eliminated, raised paths installed and bridges erected.

The undertaking was first proposed under a previous government, and it has consumed 18 years and several governments to reach this milestone.

About 80% of the route is now available and the bulk of the remaining sections is due to be completed by the year's end.

"It's truly wonderful - the greatest achievement I'll do in my time in this role," says the person who headed the initiative.

Inclusion and Challenging Elements

Establishing the route required updated statutes as well as years of meticulous preparation and extensive work along the coast to define a clear and uninterrupted trail.

In many places, new rights of access have made accessible areas that was formerly off-limits to the general populace - including beaches, dunes and headlands between the trail and the water.

Inclusion for those with disabilities has been upgraded so that additional individuals can enjoy sections of the route.

Breaks in the established web of public paths have been connected with a priority on taking the route closer to the shore and connecting stretches of coastline that had not yet been linked by a continuous walking trail.

However in a handful of locations, hikers must for a short time depart from the path. In a northern area, for example, a boat across the Mersey is necessary to continue on the trail.

One stretch in south Devon is especially challenging. At the River Erme, there is not a crossing or ferry, and the property further upstream is not public. Hikers must therefore roll up their trousers and wade across the waterway within an hour around low tide.

"It's all part of the adventure," says the project lead.

Designed for a Warming Environment

The path has been engineered with the heavier rains and higher sea levels that environmental shifts is expected to bring as a consideration.

For the first time in national legislation, there is provision for the trail to be moved away from the coast – termed "retreated" – if the shore erodes or shifts.

This permits the path to adapt to the changing shoreline and aims to ensure that the coastal walk is unbroken and usable for generations to come.

The past month have demonstrated how changeable the trail can be. An extensive part of the path on the cliffs outside Charmouth in Dorset was severed after severe storms caused a collapse.

"That section was shut and a diversion was established," said a manager for that section. "We promptly organised a 15-metre rollback with the landowner, and within weeks the path was open again."

A Groundbreaking Achievement

A prominent outdoors organisation has been advocating for enhanced access to England's coastline for many years. A spokesperson labels the new path as "revolutionary".

"This establishes a zone of access land from the path to the sea, so that allows you can leave the path to go and explore the beaches," they say. "It allows for picnics - and on an set of islands you can truly appreciate our shoreline."

Beyond England

The trail also opens up the prospect of a seamless seaside trek around the entire British Isles.

The new English coast path connects to the Wales Coast Path - an extensive trail following the Welsh coastline. It was finalised over a ten years ago and was the pioneering route in the globe to follow an whole national coastline.
