Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
