'Not in Our Village': Accommodation Site Rumours Spark Apprehension and Evening Patrols in English Community

Inside the packed shelves of a tool shop in an East Sussex community, there is a striking vacancy on the wall where kitchen knives were once displayed.

Community rumours suggest this removal is tied to the prevailing news story consuming the town: the alleged forthcoming accommodation of several hundred of individuals claiming asylum at a adjacent defence facility.

The store manager states he was instructed to take down the knives by authorities as part of a general blade awareness campaign. "Given the current situation, if that's related to the camp, I cannot say," he remarks.

A Community Filled by Confusion

This incident is symptomatic of the widespread fear and doubt in this town of around 22,000 residents. Residents are challenging plans to house up to 540 male asylum seekers at the cadet facility.

The venue was reportedly selected as part of a government commitment to relocate asylum seekers out of hotel accommodation. Despite government assurances that nothing is confirmed has been made, many residents are bracing for what they view as an imposed change on their tranquil community.

Patrols and Labels

Allegations of vigilantism have been levelled at the community after a resident-run group began to monitor the area at night, donning distinctive gear.

Members of this group are keen to dissociate from the "vigilante" description. "It's just absurd," says one participant, a ex- scout leader. "We are all men above the age of 40. The notion is unfounded."

They maintain their aim is to address local anxieties and position themselves as a supportive neighbourhood watch ahead of any rumoured arrivals.

"We have a long delay for the police to get here. So if you're facing danger, you've effectively got to ask someone to delay harming you for a bit?" one member quips.

They stress they would only act in the most serious of situations, having received training on the extent of a citizen's arrest.

Mixed Voices in the Community

While the majority of people in the town interviewed are against the scheme, there are contrasting voices. One local business owner, who himself relocated to the UK previously, comments on the friendliness he received.

"I believe it's acceptable for people to arrive," he said, noting that new arrivals is a feature across Europe. "Every country takes people."

However, this welcoming viewpoint was scarcely in evidence on a particular Tuesday evening. Tensions were elevated outside the training camp.

Hours of Speculation

A group of about 50 protesters had gathered near the camp entrance. Suspecting that cleaners were readying the site, and noting a significant police presence, many began to suspect the arrival of asylum seekers was hours away.

"As it's going to be a middle of the night operation, surely?" one man stated. "They won't bring them in during the day."

Police officers on site replied tersely to questions. A local builder described the scene: "Ordinarily, and I'm being honest, you can hear a pin drop in Crowborough at 10 o'clock."

The standoff escalated when police authorised a public order power, granting them authority to disperse anyone likely to cause disorder. For many in the crowd, this was proof the area was being cleared for the immediate transfer of asylum seekers.

Unverified claims began to circulate. One man stated he had seen vehicles carrying asylum seekers. Minutes later, a coach labelled "private service" passed by the main road, with unidentifiable faces seen at the windows, fueling the speculation.

A elected representative who arrived at the scene attempted to reassure the concerned man, pointing out that such buses were regular on that route, often transporting followers of a movement from a regional base.

Fears and Grievances

Throughout the night, heated arguments occurred between protesters and police. Irritation was directed at the perceived lack of communication from authorities.

"They are no idea who they are! They're not screened!" yelled one man at an officer. "Everything would be totally turned if your own family members was harmed, right?"

Claims of unequal treatment were made, with some stating that certain groups were being treated more harshly by the police.

Several residents stated frustration at news coverage of their concerns, particularly after a public rally attended by thousands.

"We're not far right," said one woman. "It's a quiet, normal area. They are just normal people who are opposed to this in our town."

She went on, "The problem is a large number of men we know nothing about being placed here. The idea is terrifying. This doesn't matter what race, I would carry on protesting."

The Drama That Fizzled Out

In the end, the drama fizzled out. By the small hours, it became obvious that no asylum seekers were arriving that night, and most people left.

Politically, a heated political dispute was raging. Politicians and the MP were trading accusations, with allegations of stirring up trouble and political motives being made.

One local leader accused the MP of being "wildly irresponsible" and spreading "fake news" that increased division and worry within the community.

Uncertainty Continues

Regardless of the arguments, few in the area were content with the unwanted spotlight brought upon the town. One local remarked that a friend felt "ashamed" of Crowborough because of the unrest, though they would be afraid to say so openly.

The following day, further rumours spread among activists of a renewed police presence at the camp, indicating that arrivals were imminent from that day onwards.

And so, with no official confirmation, the state of apprehension threatened to start again.
