Patrick Bamford Signs With the Blades Despite Initiating Derogatory Chants About Coach Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford has signed with Sheffield United only half a year following starting disrespectful chants targeting the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, without a club since leaving Leeds United, has signed a contract joining the second-tier strugglers until January. His lengthy spell at Elland Road was ended by mutual consent in August.
Among Bamford’s last memorable actions while at Leeds was to lead abusive songs about Chris Wilder during Leeds' promotion celebrations this spring. Currently, the former England player will be playing under Wilder as the Blades’ manager looks to pull his beloved club away from the bottom places.
Previous Conflict Between the Striker & Wilder
The pair had history before Leeds earned promotion to the top flight the previous campaign and United were defeated in the promotion decider to Sunderland. Wilder called the forward as a "muppet" back when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and the Blades secured automatic promotion whereas Leeds missed out in the playoffs.
Reconciliation and Looking Ahead
All seems to have been forgiven and forgotten with United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of a boost in attack and Bamford aiming to resurrect his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely this spring. A repentant Bamford and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, phoned Wilder the following day.
Wilder stated at the time: “Had a conversation with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no problem at all with it. I'm uncertain about the words used from a fellow pro! However I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.
“We had a short while and the same again I talked with Daniel Farke too and we had a half-hour chat with him and he is a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we used to give it and accept it and that’s part and parcel of the game across all levels, even on a Sunday morning. I've got no problem at all. I'm fine with it and I told him that to Patrick.”
Latest Playing Challenges
The forward featured in 18 games with Leeds United last season but the former Forest, Chelsea & Boro striker has struggled with injury in recent years.
