Safety Fears Intensify in Nigeria Following Mass Abduction of Over 300 Students

Armed attackers have abducted more than 300 schoolchildren and staff in what appears to be the most significant group abductions in recent Nigerian experience, according to a religious organization on Saturday.

Growing Emergency in School Institutions

The pre-dawn Friday attack on St Mary's co-educational school in western Nigeria came just days after gunmen stormed a high school in neighboring Kebbi state, taking 25 female students.

Initial reports had suggested 227 individuals were taken, but new numbers emerged after a thorough counting process determined that 303 students and 12 teachers had been abducted.

The kidnapped students, aged between eight and 18 years, account for nearly 50 percent of the school's overall student body of 629.

Official Reaction and Security Actions

Local officials have stated that intelligence departments and police are currently performing a thorough census to verify the exact number of missing individuals.

In response to the increasing safety fears, the state government has mandated the closure of all schools in the region, with neighboring states adopting similar precautionary actions.

Additionally, the federal education department has ordered the provisional closure of 47 boarding secondary schools across the country.

President Bola Tinubu has called off international engagements, including participation at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, to focus on addressing the crisis.

Recent Violent Events

The school kidnappings constitute the latest in a series of security incidents that have shaken the nation, including an assault on a place of worship in western Nigeria where gunmen shot dead two individuals and abducted dozens congregation members during a live-streamed service.

These incidents have taken place against the backdrop of international attention on Nigeria's safety situation.

Historical Background

Nigeria remains traumatized by the memory of the large-scale kidnapping of nearly 300 schoolgirls by extremist group Boko Haram in Chibok over a decade ago, with some of those victims still missing.

Firsthand Accounts

In a disturbing recording circulated by religious organizations, a upset school staff member recounted hearing the sounds of motorcycles and vehicles before experiencing "forceful banging" on various entrances of the compound.

"Students were crying," the staff member stated, recounting her panic while looking for access to the section where the screaming was most intense.

The local Catholic diocese stated that the "assailants operated aggressively and uninterrupted for nearly three hours, moving through sleeping quarters."

Public Response and Fears

At the same time, about 600km away on the outskirts of Abuja, concerned guardians were collecting their children from educational institutions following the closure directive.

One parent, a 40-year-old nurse, voiced her disbelief at the scale of the kidnapping, questioning how 300 children could be taken at once.

She stated that the "authorities is not doing enough to address insecurity," and expressed support for external assistance to "salvage this situation."

Continuing Security Challenges

For years, heavily armed criminal gangs have been conducting killings and kidnappings for ransom in rural areas of northern and central Nigeria, where state presence is minimal.

While nobody has claimed responsibility for the latest incidents, bandit gangs demanding financial compensation frequently target schools in rural areas where security is weak.

These groups maintain camps in extensive forest areas spanning several states in the west of Nigeria.

While these criminals have no political motives and are mainly motivated by monetary profit, their growing cooperation with jihadist groups from the northeastern region has become a significant source of worry for authorities and experts alike.
