As I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to throughout the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and being named best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
