An informant has told a parliamentary probe that the UK abandoned sensitive equipment permitting the militant group to track down Afghans who worked with international military.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger

The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were advised to move homes and alter their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's response of a massive leak of personal details affecting nearly 19,000 Afghans who had asked to relocate to Britain to avoid militant rule.

Data Disclosure Occurred

A spreadsheet containing their personal data, including identities, contact details and occasionally household data, was mistakenly released by a staff member employed at special operations center in last year.

The leak came to light only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had requested to settle in the UK were posted on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's this misconception that the Taliban lack the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed lawmakers.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have a contact number, they can locate your precise location. That is what specialized teams did.”

Under inquiry about regarding if authorities had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower stated: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the investigation indicated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and associates of individuals impacted by the leak had been executed.

A gag order about the incident was implemented in last year and restricted relevant facts concerning it from public disclosure until mid-2025.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with informed affected households they were supporting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“We advised that they moved if they could and altered their contact details. These represented the two main details that, should militant forces had access to such data, would lead to their location being found,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower contested that government assessment conducted by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the dataset by militant forces was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are not confronting militant forces; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

Person A described horrific abuse endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to try to get the family to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
